Good afternoon CNUSD Families,
I am writing you today to provide an update on the latest information regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements in California schools. To quickly summarize the information below, we would like to announce CNUSD will NOT require the COVID-19 vaccination for students in the 2022-23 school year. Please read below for more details on the latest news.
Earlier this week, the CNUSD Board of Education took action to approve Resolution 87 calling for state officials to maintain exemptions to the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for students and staff.
Last night, we received word of two important updates from state officials:
- California Department of Public Health announced Governor Newsom will delay his plan to create a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for students via regulation, pending full FDA approval of the vaccine. To ensure sufficient time for successful implementation of new vaccine requirements, California will not initiate the regulatory process for a COVID-19 vaccine for the 2022-2023 school year and as such, any vaccine requirements would not take effect until after full FDA approval and no sooner than July 1, 2023.
- Sen. Richard Pan (SD 6) announced he has paused Senate Bill 871, which would have added COVID-19 vaccinations to the list of required immunizations for school-aged children, without a personal belief exemption.
What does this mean for CNUSD?
We can confidently say CNUSD will not require the COVID-19 vaccination for students in the 2022-23 school year, and parents will have the choice whether to vaccinate their students.
We will continue to keep our families informed should we receive any further information from the state regarding COVID-19 updates that affect our District.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sam Buenrostro
Superintendent
